Sticker Happy!

Sticker Happy!

Inspired by a project I found on Stephanie Harari’s blog: http://creativityasawayoflife.com/2013/10/13/polka-dots-event-end-of-year-school-party-idea/

I had 7 sheets of little stickers lying around from our own activity kit : Picture Perfect! And all I needed was blank paper. I did this activity of sticking the shapes randomly in the diary for almost 30 minutes and my little one watched. When I asked him to join me, he did something really strange. He went ahead and matched forms and colours and pasted new ones over the exact match. Amazing how differently each individual mind works!

Do you ever stay up late in the night because sleep won’t come to you? Well, I normally don’t have this problem, I am thankful that I typically have a full day, tiring sometimes, but mostly happy days filled with work, struggles, joys, victories, losses, and lots more.

But earlier this week, I had a sleepless night – I just could not fall asleep, and I tossed and turned till finally I decided to get out of bed and doodle. Yes, I like to doodle and in some strange way it calms me down. All the circles, the zig-zags, the eyes, the lips that I draw can help me get a lot of the day’s activities sorted in my head. That night, it was about 12.15 am, I sat with my pencils and crayons and I drew. I must have been at my drawings for about half an hour when I felt I could sleep. I put everything away, and slept.

I found a repeat of the experience over this Sunday. Another enthusiastic mom and I took 4 young boys out to spend some energy in the outdoors. They played, ran, climbed screamed, jumped and seemed to have a ball for almost 5 hours at a stretch.

Two of them were 5 years old and the other two were 12 somethings, so you can well imagine the noise and chaos they enjoyed between them! As the evening of fun came to a close, we headed to a rather popular and crowded pizza place. The service was taking a while and the kids were finding it difficult to get their day’s excitement under control, inside the restaurant.

I love drawing in the outdoors and usually carry my art book, crayons and sketch pens in the hope of finding time to draw. So as the little ones waited impatiently to be served, I took out my art papers and colours. Instantly, the restless group settled down to drawing flowers and sailboats and aliens.

I had expected the little ones to get involved in the drawing, and was pleasantly surprised to see the older boys get as involved. These two experiences led me to realize that art and self expression are a great way to calm a noisy, restless mind. While children take to it more quickly and spontaneously, adults can benefit from the art as well.

As a parent, this made me realize how important it is to include a session of art in my boys’ schedule on a regular basis just so they can find a way to express themselves and deal with anything and everything that’s bothering them! That’s one more ‘Like’ for arts and crafts!

If you have had experiences where art / craft came to the rescue, we would love to hear about it. Do share your experiences in the comments below!

Art is good for your kids

Art lets the child find expression

Art lets the child find expression

“Creativity is more than just being different. Anybody can plan weird; that’s easy. What’s hard is to be as simple as Bach. Making the simple, awesomely simple, that’s creativity” –Charles Mingus.

Can one challenge the creativity of children? Those little humans who don’t know what it’s like to be tied down by chains of insecurity, judgment, competition and perfection. We all want the best for our children. When doctors, teachers, and experts tried finding a way to make that happen, the answer was creativity. Learning by means of music, craft, painting a picture, knitting, kneading the dough, solving puzzles and playing simple board games.

The activities children participate in up to the age of ten are what help develop their learning pattern. Research says that children when exposed to creativity learn faster.

Art and Child Development
Science claims that creative learning helps develop the right side of the brain which captures music, images, colors, intuition and the expression of emotions. When considered from a different aspect, we see that art teaches expression. It has been observed that children who tend to be reserved express themselves through creativity. To them, creativity is what wings are to butterflies. Art teaches discovery. For example, while painting when children mix red and yellow together they create orange. Thus the child’s brain becomes engaged in the discovery of “how” and “why.” Art teaches us that our language does not limit our thinking.

Creativity in developing Motor Skills
Tying knots, or cutting paper to form shapes, squeezing paint from a bottle, and making small dough balls might look like insignificant tasks but they are worth a lot more. These seemingly insignificant tasks are what develop the child’s motor skills enabling him/her to do things like turning the page of a book or filling a paper with words.

Tactile Learning and Child Development
Tactile learning is based on the concept of learning by doing. The fact that it helps in our development is proven in our daily lives. For instance, how would you learn to play cricket? By reading a book about it or by actually using a bat and ball?

Music and Dance
Psychologists, neuroscientists and experts in early childhood development have demonstrated that music and dance does more for children than simply bring them joy; it helps their brain cells make the connections needed for virtually every kind of intelligence. It develops the child in various aspects- intellectual, social, emotional and their language skills. It helps them learn the sounds and meanings of words. Music strengthens memory while dance teaches self expression. Children learn to cooperate, compromise, share, and concentrate- while making music together- which become invaluable as they enter school, face new challenges, and begin to form new relationships. Research has shown that students taking courses in music scored higher in the SAT when compared to students who don’t.

But creativity goes far beyond the statistics measured by studies. It can become a crucial mode of uninhibited self-expression and amazement for a child. It is a fundamental component of what makes us uniquely human.

When a child creates, one witnesses magic.
